The Danube was originally presented at the 5th Padua Hills Festival, Claremont, California, in 1982 under the title You Can Swim in the Danube--But the Water is Too Cold. It was directed by Maria Irene Fornes. Sets and costumes were by Monica Lorca. The cast was as follows:
